My husband & I own 2 dogs. They are considered a part of the family and we aim to include them in many of our activities. This means that we have accumulated a great deal of dog stuff through the years. It is unbelievable the amount of advertising there is that gets directed towards canine owners and pet owners in general. The marketers know that people love their housepets and are willing to spend a whole lot of money on them. It seems that each holiday season there is more & more dog stuff in the stores.

This past holiday season I couldn't believe my eyes when I was in the accessory section of a national department store. At the start I thought there was a new a segment of doll garments that was placed in this department. Upon looking closer I realized that the garments were for dogs. Along with the clothing there were beds, toys, an anti bark collar, designer dishes and other dog stuff. This is a store that doesn't ordinarily have a housepet section. I asked one of the sales clerks when this a segment of the anti bark collar & other dog stuff had been added. She said that it was part of their holiday campaign nation wide. It seems that people were wanting more items that they could buy, not only for their dog, but for the pets of their friends. I jokingly asked if this didn't snub cat owners, but I was told that the pet cat merchandize was on the opposite side of the display I was viewing.

The canine stuff included very elaborate outfits for the holidays, along with the anti bark collar. Velvet gowns, satin off the shoulder cocktail dresses, & the more traditional knit sweaters. There were also collars that were adorned with sequins & stones. I could tell that the sales clerk wasn't thrilled with this new merchandize. I commented that our female canine would certainly prefer precious stones. When I said this she took me over to the fine jewelry counter and showed me a display of precious & semi precious collars. I could not believe what I was seeing. I understood that there were specialty stores & catalogs that managed this sort of canine stuff, but I never believed that it would be featured in a national department store. The clerk mentioned that they had a considerable display of Halloween costumes in the fall together with distinctive treats for the 4 legged trick or treater's.

I came home & told my husband about the display of canine stuff. He commented that we may be recipients of some of the items, because our family members & friends know that we pamper our dogs. I told him that if we did get some-thing I hoped it would be the fourteen carat gold collar with the pearl pendant.
