When I was very first dating my wife, we were pretty casual about our anniversaries. Neither of us were people to put much stock in tradition, and generally an anniversary party was just an excuse to be together. After we got married though, we abruptly became much more proper in our lifestyle. We heard one of our wedding songs on the stereo and both had a minute where we knew we wanted to commemorate our anniversary in a more official way. Hearing one of our wedding songs filled us with longing to recapture the sentiment that those wedding songs had engendered on our wedding day. We had always mocked our parents and their excessive wedding ceremony anniversaries. On their golden wedding ceremony anniversary, for example, they invited practically everybody they knew. Me and my siblings were convinced that it was most likely a larger crowd than had attended their initial wedding. We were each expected to buy them anniversary gifts with the extravagance of wedding presents, and if anybody was silly enough to not buy something nice, they certainly would be cut out for the next half a year.

When we got married, I believed that we would never have that form of attitude toward our wedding ceremony anniversaries. You see, the way the world looked to me when I was youthful, what was important was living your life each day. Big occasions, anniversaries, and historical dates are not that important. What's important is right now. I had always believed that celebrating wedding ceremony anniversaries was not necessary. You simply had to celebrate each day of your marriage. Once I got married though, something changed. Abruptly, I felt the need to commemorate time in a way I had never done before.

The first wedding anniversary was not very formal. It was a weekend getaway, and even though it was quite a lot more exaggerated than our usual vacations, we definitely didn't make that big a deal about it. After that, though, all of our wedding anniversaries have gotten larger and larger. Now that we have been married for five years, we will typically start planning things out a month ahead of time. We'll have a formal supper, go to the opera, and possibly take a weekend trip. Do not get me wrong - I adore the celebration. Nevertheless, it looks like I've lost something. My youthful spontaneity may be going forever.
